I created the Fretboard Toolbox method because I needed a way to see how theory applied to my guitar, in a way that did not take a Master's Degree in Music Theory to figure out.  I have gained pieces of this knowledge from all of the same resources you probably use: books, DVD's, Internet resources, and lessons.

What I have never seen, though, is all of that information presented in a way that I could see all at once, in each of the 12 most commonly played major and relative minor keys. Once I saw how predictable a ton of music is based on chords that all go together seamlessly within a key, I set up a Fretboard Toolbox for my guitar.
I tested my Toolbox idea by trying to figure out and play along with literally thousands of my favorite songs, which has brought me tons of enjoyment- I had always wanted to be one of "those people" who could figure out songs on the fly and jump in right in the middle of a song.  Once I saw the success that my Guitar Fretboard Toolbox brought me, I wondered if I could make one for a mandolin, since I'd always wanted to learn.  The chords and notes are all the same- just the fretboard layout is different.  This required building a Fretboard Toolbox for mandolin, and, of course, buying a mandolin to test it out.  Learning mandolin has been a blast!  Next came the banjo, and then ukulele, which both went just like the mandolin.  Lastly, I just had to see if I could build one for piano, so I built one and had to buy a 61 key piano (so I wouldn't spend too much on it).  After finding the Piano Fretboard Toolbox amazingly helpful in learning to read music and play songs way beyond my experience, (I know pianos do not have fretboards, but piano came last!), I found out that 61 keys is not enough for lots of the music I'm finding I like to play so I had to buy a 76 key keyboard!

These tools were all built out of a desire to understand music deeper, so I could learn to play music better. Each Fretboard Toolbox Edition was not only a joy to build, but there's not one edition that still doesn't continue to teach me every time I use it.  I hope that you find that they do the same for you!
